10 Questions with Alice Spickard

Alice is the director of children's ministry at CTK.

1. Describe (in 10 words or less) what you do as the director of children's ministry.
Love children; pray for families; manage their care at CTK.

2. What drew you to this job?
So many cute babies and toddlers running around after the church service.

3. What part of your job most excites you?
Thinking through how to care for CTK children with excellence, and how to encourage and support parents on this journey.

4. Where were you born? Where did you grow up?
I was born in Miami, Florida, and moved to Raleigh at age 7. I grew up here, in the North Hills area.

5. Where did you go to school (high school / college / grad school)? What did you major in?
I went to Sanderson High School and then headed to UNC-Chapel Hill for an undergraduate degree in Sociology and International Studies. I completed two Master's of Education degrees at UNC-Greensboro; one in Elementary Education and one in Counseling with an emphasis on College Student Development.

6. What else have you done for work (paid and volunteer)?
I have spent the past 12 years being a Mom and a school volunteer. More recently, I have worked as a teacher assistant and a substitute teacher at Douglas Elementary School.

7. When did you become a Christian? What were the circumstances?
I became a Christian and had a defining moment of accepting Christ when I was in the ninth grade. It was not until college; however, that I began to fully understand my need of a Savior and began to discover the truth of God's word.

8. Tell us about your family.
I have been married to David Spickard for 15 years and we have 4 children: Ben -12, Scott -9, Meg - 8, and Claire - 6. We (really Claire) are the proud owners of Squeakers, the guinea pig.

9. What do you do with your free time?
I spend my free time on the sidelines at soccer games, tennis matches, and seasonal sporting events, watching our children play. I like to play tennis, read, bake, and enter cooking contests.

10. What is the best book you have read in the past year?
I am currently reading a book with my neighborhood book club called Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise, written by Ruth Reichl, a world-renowned food critic, regarding her experiences reviewing restaurants in New York. This is a light, quick read, and though maybe not the "best," it is entertaining and one I can still remember!
