  • Series: Leadership Development

Spickard Family ProOver the next month, this space will include several short pieces meant to introduce the congregation to the three men nominated to serve as elders at CTK.  For those folks who do not know James Sutton, David Hill, or David Spickard, this will give them an opportunity find out more about them.  Likewise, those who already know them might learn something new.

In addition, everyone is encouraged to strike up a conversation with each of the nominees on Sunday mornings.  Members of CTK will be able to vote during the congregational meeting held March 29 following the service.

1.    Where were you born?

Nashville, TN

2.    Where did you grow up?

Nashville, TN

3.    When and where did you meet your wife?

At UNC. Alice dated my college roommate.  When their relationship ended, I swooped in.

4.    Do you have children?  Describe each of your children with one adjective each.

Yes, we have four children.  Forgive me for using more than one adjective to describe each of them:

Ben (12 years old) - wise, kind hearted, talented, loves to read

Scott (9) - funny, Tarheel born and bred, athletic, observant

Meg (7) - sweet, kind, up for anything, a great friend

Claire (6) - spunky, articulate, loves animals (particularly, Squeakers, our guinea pig), a gymnast

5.    When did you become a Christian?  What were the circumstances?

Thankfully, I grew up in a Christian home and learned about God at an early age.  My father and brother were role models for me for what it meant to follow Christ along with others in our home church.  My church in Nashville and my involvement with Intervarsity Christian Fellowship at UNC helped me understand the Lord more deeply and my desperate need for a Savior.

6.    What do you like most about CTK?

The mission and the people, and of course the donuts.

7.    What do you do for work?

I work for Jobs for Life (www.jobsforlife.com), a non-profit ministry that helps churches and community non-profits train at risk adults and youth to find and keep meaningful jobs.

8.    What do you like most about it?

Seeing lives changed both of those we serve and our leaders.  I have had several occasions in which I have seen people transformed from lives of deep hopelessness and despair.   Reminds me of the power of God, His Word, and His people.

9.    What do you like to do with your free time?

I enjoy playing, watching, coaching and reading about sports.  So, I play basketball, tennis, and run on a regular basis, find time to watch games (particularly Carolina games), and regularly read the sports page and Sports Illustrated.  I coach Ben's and Scott's city league basketball teams and help with Meg's soccer team.  In my down moments, I hone my golf skills on 2009 Tiger Woods on the Wii.  Beyond that, I play the piano, help Alice take care of the kids, and fold lots of laundry.

10. What is the best book(s) that you read in the past year? (after the Bible)

Well, keeping with the sports theme...The Blind Side and Moneyball both by Michael Lewis.  The Blind Side chronicles the life of an inner city young man from Memphis and his growth into one of the best left tackles in football.  Moneyball describes the Oakland A's unique strategy to build a successful baseball team through overlooked statistical analysis.

11. Why do you want to serve CTK as an elder?

Love for the church and love for the people.  Desire to see all of us at CTK experience the hope of Christ.

12. What is God teaching you in your life right now?

His sovereignty.  Despite the chaos and uncertainty of the time we're in, He reminds me of His complete control and the ways He's advancing His Kingdom throughout the world.
